‘Friends of ESRA in Israel’ is a UK registered charity set up to introduce new friends and supporters to the wonderful educational and welfare work of the long-established Israeli NGO – ESRA.
ESRA is Israel’s largest English-speaking volunteer organisation, aiding the integration of Olim while working towards equality in Israeli society through its educational and welfare projects.

Financial support enables students to complete their studies and become contributing members of society, as well as the opportunity to experience volunteering and learn that to give is to get. 50% of students participate in the project for two years or more.

ESRA’s Flagship Project
Students are provided with housing in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and in return each student mentors a group of local schoolchildren and becomes a social activist, enriching the whole community.
‘Students Build a Community’ recently expanded and includes 8 different projects based on the same proven theme in the Israeli cities of Netanya (4 projects), Akko, South Tel Aviv, Jerusalem (2023) and Rehovot (from 2024).
In 2022-3, 231 pupils and 59 students participated in this successful and much requested project. The aim is to expand to other areas of need – and there are many more.
English Tutoring Programme
From Your Own Home, Share Your Gift of English with Israeli Children!
Help school children from ages 10 to 14 years improve their English oral proficiency.
Volunteer as an online tutor, from your own home, and give Israeli children a chance to practice their English language skills. The programme is recognised and promoted by the Israel Ministry of Education.
• 30-40 minutes weekly sessions via Zoom, after school hours.
• A knowledge of Hebrew is not essential.
• No previous teaching experience required.
• Training provided by experienced ESRA tutors.

About Friends of ESRA in Israel
Friends of ESRA in Israel was formed in 2017 and registered as a UK charity in 2019 in order to provide financial or material assistance to support the charitable work of ESRA’s work in Israel. As part of this objective, it desires to bring awareness in the UK of the work of ESRA as Israel’s largest English-speaking volunteer organisation.
The trustees of Friends of ESRA in Israel host an annual fundraising event in London, as well as arranging educational briefings on the work of Students Build a Community, the English Tutoring Programme and ESRA across the UK.

UK Fundraising for ESRA
With active volunteers in all areas of the operation, backed up by a very small staff administrative staff. It means only 13% of income is spent on administrative expenses – an extremely low figure for the non-profit sector.
ESRA is awarded the internationally-recognised Midot ‘Seal of Effectiveness’ for its commitment, leadership and impact to create social value and generate positive changes in the lives of its beneficiaries.
